WHITBY SENIORS aka EGGS
The Seniors group here is open to anyone over the age of 55. During the Summer months we play a full 18 hole Stableford competition every Tuesday and Thursday morning teeing off from 8am onwards with groups being made up informally as people arrive. In the Winter competitions of 2009-10 we played 39 games. We also have a few Texas Scrambles, a couple of Medal Competitions and one Bogey a year. Some of these games were played in terrible conditions but we persevere! We were blown off a few times but the wet and snow affected us only a few times as the course is never formally closed except for the Christmas period. The wet weather affected us more in Winter 2007-8 when, despite many brave attempts to do a full round, we only managed to complete 35 games. For two years we have played only 15 holes in Winter and since this is not universally popular we discuss and vote on this at the AGM lunch each year. Last winter we played rounds of 18 holes. The advent of new CONGU rules and software has allowed us to use the Club computer for inputting scores. This has worked well since Summer 2008 and did away with the need for me scan all the score cards and using my home computer for working out the best 6 cards and eclectic. I have now handed all this over to someone younger! It also provided us with a better method of adjusting handicaps by allowing the computer to do the adjustments by calculation. Fortunately the software can be adapted to cope with a 15 hole round with 9 holes counting for handicap purposes.
During the Summer months we have "friendly" interclub 4 Ball Better Ball Match Play competitions played in Stableford format against Seniors from other clubs which are held once a week either on Tuesdays or Thursdays usually starting at the more humane hour of 9am. This is a team event where 16 players are selected by a random draw from those who put their names down as wanting to play. Each game is followed by a lunch which usually costs between £10 and £11. There are no green fees for these events. When such competitions are not taking place we again play full 18 hole Stablefords at home. Those not playing in the team usually run a one off informal Stableford at home for 50p each in the kitty – winner takes all. Such games do not count for handicap, best 6 cards or eclectic. In Summer 2010 we plan to play Kirkby Moorside, Hunley Hall, Middlesbrough Municipal, Saltburn, Brass Castle, Eaglescliffe, Scarborough North Cliff, Malton, Wilton, Teesside, and Filey in both home and away matches. With these 22 interclub matches and about 20 formal Stablefords it’s quite a full Summer programme. The Summer competition timetable is almost finalised and will go onto this website ASAP.
Within the bi-weekly Stableford competitions we run a best 6 cards and eclectic series in both the Winter and Summer programmes. The daily winner wins three balls! To spread the balls around whenever a person wins 3 balls he gets 3 shots off his next score if he comes in with another high score – this does not affect his handicap but makes it difficult to win the balls again! However for the past three Summers at least one person has won 3 balls three times ie with a 6 point deduction for the last win! And in the 2007-8 Winter competitions 20 odd people won the balls at least once – so they do get spread around!
We used to charge a Seniors subscription fee of £6 a year and have a 50p entry “fee” for each individual Stableford and this provided money for engraving trophies and the honours board, prize money for winners of the competitions at the end of the season, and paid for the bi-weekly three balls. But due to certain people (and I know who they are) not entering these games but taking prize money we decided at the 2008 AGM to charge an upfront yearly fee of £25 at the start of the Winter season and no individual game fee. This was not universally popular but seems to be working well. The treasurers workload is much lighter!
MESSAGE FROM MALCOLM
Our numbers are again depleted this year - even for us! We have experienced yet another year of illnesses, major and miraculous operations, and sudden and sad "departures" due to natural causes. However some still survive - (Ken Robson decided to call it a day just after his 85th birthday but is now a social member at 90 this year but we still see him hunched over a pint). Despite arthritis, and things we don’t talk about, Eric Luck, who was 80 on 10 May 2010 is determined to beat Ken’s record and has solved his lack of mobility problem by using a very strong personal all terrain buggy.
We have dropped from 52 to around 30 paid up members in the past year or two so we need more younger (or older) seniors in our membership list to enable us to regularly field full and competitive teams of 16 members in the 22 matches with the other clubs in the Summer months. We would also welcome you to the very competitive Tuesday and Thursday games. If you are not very competitive then the social side is there to solve the worlds problems after the games - and then there's the mornings where you can enjoy the glorious early views in Summer over Sandsend not to mention the equally glorious sunrises during the winter months.
One last word – we are made up of a mixture of ages and talents varying from those who have taken up golf in retirement to those who have played golf all their lives. Whatever your skill level you will be made most welcome as a new member and someone will always partner you –your only problem is the early 8am starts in winter.
