Pro's Weekly Report  -   27 July 2010

Colin Hood won the Midweek Stableford on Wednesday 21st July with 44 points, giving him a narrow win over Richard Barker, Austin James and Mark Greasby on 43. Colin Rutland had 41.

Saturday 24th July was Mens Invitation Day at the club, where members invite a guest who is a member of another club. Winning pair in this Fourball Betterball Medal were Ian Wiggins of Whitby and Peter Bell of North Cliff with a 10 under par score of 61. Other prizewinners:

(Whitby names first) 62 A James & G Jones, D Kirk & N Sinclair, S Bircham & M Readman; 63 D Armstrong & G Holmes.

Club caterer Bob Scott finally won a trophy on Sunday after numerous near-finishes all season. His score of 62 gave him a two-stroke cushion over nearest challengers John McMurran, Geoff Cooling and Martin Shackleton on 64. Eric Wilson had 65 with Mike Brown and Steve Dosdale on 66.

The juniors played for the Colonel Henry Youth Trophy on the same day, with Michael Coates a decisive winner with 8 up against the card.

Kieran Noble was second with 1 up, and James Greenwood a distant third on 8 down.

On Saturday 31st July there is a Stableford competition, and the Elliot Cup takes place on Sunday 1st August. The Midweek Medal is on Wednesday 4th August.

The seniors entertain Malton & Norton at home on Thursday 5th August.

There is still time to get your name down to play in this fixture.

There will be junior coaching on Sunday 1st August, but then there will be a two-week break. Coaching will resume on Sunday 22nd August.

Mrs Rachel Coxon won this month's draw for £200 in the 200 Club. There are some numbers available in the 200 Club; if you would like to be involved, please speak to me in the Pro Shop.

Tony's A-Z of Tips. This week S is for ? I was spoilt for choice this week - it could have been slice, shank, sand or swing - but I have decided that S is for Smooth. People often ask me whether they are swinging too quickly or too slowly. Everyone is different, and you only have to watch the top players on television to see that. The common denominator isn't speed, but smoothness. Whatever speed you swing at, swing smoothly. Play the awkward pitch over the bunker smoothly, roll in that short putt smoothly. Try to find a familiar rhythm that you can use as a pattern for your swing, then keep it in mind when you execute the shot. Anyone who has had a lesson from me will know that my favourite is the rhythm of a child on a swing - some people like the

1,2,3 of waltz rhythm. Smoothness will help your swing to work even if all the components are not all perfect!

TIPS FROM THE GREATS

Just a few tips quoted by great players of yesteryear:

Sam Snead on the Grip:-

A club should be held as one would hold a bird -

Lightly, you mustn't hurt it

Bobby Jones on starting the backswing:-

The initial movement of the club away from the ball should result from forces originating in the left side.  The real takeoff is from the left foot, starting the movement of the body.

Jack Nicklaus on playing out of the rough:-

Be sure to open the club face at address.  The taller or thicker the rough the more open.

....and Severiano Ballesteros on the same subject:-

My experience is that heavy grass tends to 'grab' the toe of the club head and knock it back into an open position before impact.  To compensate for this, I close the face at address very slightly.

Bobby Jones on "The Chip":-

It is difficult to say when a chip becomes a run-up or a pitch; there is no sharp dividing line where one leaves off and the other begins; but there is a very definite separation of putting from anything else in the game; and the player will do well to observe the distinction.  He may consider, if he likes, that in chipping he is merely reducing the iron stroke to miniature, but let him not attempt to extend his putting to embrace anything else.

Lee Trevino on Pressure:-

Pressure is playing for ten dollars when you don't have a dime in your pocket.

Gary Player on Luck:-

The more I practice, the luckier I get

Harry Vardon on Restraint:-

Don't play too much golf.   Two rounds a day are plenty

Sam Snead on Fast Greens:-

These greens are so fast I have to hold my putter over the ball and hit it with the shadow.

Tommy Bolt on losing your temper:-

Never break your putter and your driver in the same round or you're dead.

Walter Hagen on "Forget the Barrel":-

Don't fall for this turn-in-a-barrel nonsense, with your head fixed solidly in the centre of your turn.  You've got to move a little bit sideways with your turn.  This gets your weight onto your right foot and your head well behind the ball, so you can put power into your blow.  It's like throwing a punch.

Jack Nicklaus on bunker shots:-

If you find you play best from sand by adopting a standard technique and simply varying the force of the swing, here's a means of gauging the amount of power needed.  Just tell yourself to swing twice as hard as you would for a chip shot of the same distance.  For example, if you have a fifteen yard sand shot, think of the force of a thirty-yard chip from grass.

Lee Trevino on Winning:-

You can make a lot of money in this game. Just ask my ex-wives. Both of them are so rich that neither of their husbands work.

.........and from Sports Commentators:

Steve Ryder covering the US Masters:-

"Ballesteros felt much better today after a 69 yesterday."

Ken Brown commentating on golfer Nick Faldo and his caddie Fanny Sunneson lining-up shots at the Scottish Open:-

"Some weeks Nick likes to use Fanny, other weeks he prefers to do it by himself."

US PGA Commentator :-

"One of the reasons Arnie (Arnold Palmer) is playing so well is that, before each tee shot, his wife takes out his balls and kisses them .... Oh my god!! What have I just said??"

GOLFING HUMOUR

Golf as described to me by Someone who would like to remain anonymous:

Golf can best be defined as an endless series of tragedies obscured by the occasional miracle, followed by a good bottle of beer.

Golf! You hit down to make the ball go up. You swing left and the ball goes right. The lowest score wins. And on top of that, the winner buys the drinks.

Golf is harder than baseball In golf, you have to play your foul balls.

If you find you do not mind playing golf in the rain, the snow, even during a hurricane, here's a valuable tip: your life is in trouble.

Golfers who try to make everything perfect before taking the shot rarely make a perfect shot.

The term 'mulligan' is really a contraction of the phrase 'maul it again.'

A gimmie can best be defined as an agreement between two golfers. .neither of whom can putt very well.

An interesting thing about golf is that no matter how badly you play; it is always possible to get worse.

Golf's a hard game to figure. One day you'll go out and slice it and shank it, hit into all the traps and miss every green. The next day you go out and for no reason at all you really stink.

If your best shots are the practice swing and the 'gimmie putt', you might wish to reconsider this game.

Golf is the only sport where the most feared opponent is you.

Golf is like marriage: If you take yourself too seriously it won't work, and both are expensive.

The best wood in most amateurs' bags is the pencil.

Why Golf Is Better Than Sex . . . .. .

#10. A below par performance is considered damn good.

#9. You can stop in the middle and have a cheeseburger and a couple of beers.
#8. It's much easier to find the sweet spot.
#7. Foursomes are encouraged.
#6. You can still make money doing it as a senior.
#5. Three times a day is possible.
#4. Your partner doesn't hire a lawyer if you play with someone else.

#3. If you live in Florida , you can do it almost every day.
#2. You don't have to cuddle with your partner when you're finished.

And the NUMBER ONE reason why golf is better than sex . . . . .

#1. When your equipment gets old you can replace it!

Just a little something to make you smile:

10 CADDY JOKES

Golfer: "Think I'm going to drown myself in the lake."

Caddy: "I don't think you can keep your head down that long."

Golfer: "I'd move heaven and earth to break 100 on this course."

Caddy: "Try heaven, you've already moved most of the earth."

Golfer: "Do you think my game is improving?"

Caddy: "Yes sir, you miss the ball much closer now."

Golfer: "Do you think I can get there with a 5 iron?"

Caddy: "Eventually."

Golfer: "You've got to be the worst caddy in the world."

Caddy: "I don't think so sir. That would be too much of a coincidence."

Golfer: "Please stop checking your watch all the time. It's too much of a distraction."

Caddy: "It 's not a watch - it's a compass."

Golfer: "How do you like my game?"

Caddy: "Very good sir, but personally, I prefer golf."

Golfer: "Do you think it's a sin to play on Sunday?"

Caddy: "The way you play, sir, it's a sin on any day."

Golfer: "This is the worst course I've ever played on."

Caddy: "This isn't the golf course. We left that an hour ago."

Golfer: "That can't be my ball, it's too old."

Caddy: "Well it's been a long time since we teed off, sir."

Poetical Don'ts

Don’t lift your head until you’ve hit

The ball and are quite done with it:

Of golfing rules that is the best,

It paves the way for all the rest.

Don’t grip the club with fingers tight,

But let your hold be sure and slight:

Then only can the shot be true,

When wrists are free to follow through.

Don’t make the shot, or trust to chance,

Till you have nicely squared your stance:

The game is played with feet and hands,

As every golfer understands.

Don’t lunge upon the tee for length,

Nine parts of golf is art, not strength;

The longest straightest shots are made

When truly timed and smoothly played.

Don’t sway! Your troubles all begin

With this unpardonable sin,

Which ranks all other faults above,

By making every shot a shove.

Don’t press, but play your shots with ease,

Flicking the wrists, bending the knees.

Golf is a game, you need not knit

Your brows when you are playing it.

Don’t take your mind’s-eye off the ball,

But think of nothing else at all,

Giving it a timely smack,

Slick in the middle of the back.

Don’t copy every other style you see,

But stick to one consistently.

These laws observe and you will find

The hands and clubs obey the mind

SPRING RENOVATION WORK

The course has come out of a prolonged and cold winter and is now enduring a particularly cold, and now dry, spring. Combined with the ravages of winter play, the greens are now in need of the spring renovation work.

In an ideal world such work would be done when biological conditions are right. However competitions and fixtures decree that allotted times for such procedures have to be pre-planned to fit into the scheme of things. A window was booked last year for work to commence on May 10th to allow us a week to work on the greens and, breakdowns permitting, there should be a marked improvement following this.

The spring renovation work consists of hollow-coring (spiking that actually removes cores from the surface) followed by overseeding an application of (micro-biological) bio-stimulant, fertilizer and a substantial top dressing of a 70/30 sand and soil mix (approximately 50 tonnes).

Obviously this will cause some disruption while the work is being done, and will take a few days to settle back down, but it is vital work to ensure that the greens are as good as possible for as long as possible during the main playing season. We hope that all members and visitors will understand the need for this work, and be patient while it is being done.
